Southeast Asian Nations Grapple with Neutrality in US-China Trade War
Malaysia and Singapore face mounting challenges in maintaining neutrality as the US-China trade war intensifies. China’s assertive stance is forcing ASEAN members into increasingly difficult diplomatic positions, with trade concessions to Washington drawing immediate demands for equal treatment from Beijing.
Malaysian Trade Minister Zafrul Aziz revealed China’s uncompromising position during tariff negotiations: "They are saying, ’Whatever you give to the US, we want the same because whatever you give to the US is at our expense.’" The sentiment echoes Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong’s warning about the vanishing middle ground in great power economics.
Speaking at a UBS conference, Gan described neutrality as a "knife-edge" act, with the strategic space for non-alignment shrinking rapidly. The growing bifurcation of global trade systems presents particular challenges for cryptocurrency markets that rely on cross-border financial flows and technological cooperation between East and West.
